Current implementation status
- The minimum age for obtaining an intermediate license in the U.S. ranges from 14 years, 3 months to 17 years.
- The minimum age is younger than age 16 in 6 states; age 16 in 33 states; and older than age 16 in 12 states.
- Only New Jersey licenses at age 17 currently, although several states have increased the age beyond 16 through learner policies (e.g., a minimum learner age of 15 years, 9 months and a six- month minimum holding period increases the intermediate licensing age to 16 years, 3 months).
